Last winter, many
Earthinhand had many pellet stove owners inquire about burning corn in their pellet stoves. Some owners , forgoing our advice not to, decided out of frustration to burn straight corn if they were unable to find wood pellets. Some who had a supply of wood pellets, decided to make their supply last longer by burning a corn/wood pellet mixture. Hopefully it did not damage their stoves. This is always a possibility if the stove is not made to burn the hotter burning corn. Stove owners should always consult with the manufacturer before burning a fuel other than what the stove was intended to burn.
This year, Earthinhandcornstoves is selling 50lb bags of Wheat pellets as an alternative to wood pellets. The Wheat pellets burn at about 7800 BTU, which is a little hotter than wood pellets, but cooler than corn. The ash is about 6%, about 3X as much as corn. The cool thing about Wheat pellets is that it is made from the waste product that comes about from the processing wheat into a usable form.

Corn stoves are becoming a hot item again. Orders are up, and corn fuel is being sold in record amounts. Earthinhandcornstoves.com sells stoves that retain a clinker in the burn pot. We believe these types stoves are more efficient because the heat remains centered in the clinker. The clinker is not stirred up or broken up with the ash deposited into an ash tray like some other models. The corn stove models that Earthinhand sells are from companies with a reputation for quality in stove manufacturing. Last year Earth-in-Hand had a record year, with sales continuing into the summer months. Smart customers were getting their stoves early. It is not too late to get a model for the upcoming heating year, but the models are going fast, so order sooner than latter, so that you can acquire a good position on the corn stove waiting list.
This year is also the first year that we will be selling Wheat Pellets, as an alternative to wood pellets. Last year we had many people coming to us to buy corn to burn it their wood pellet stoves. Depending upon the manufacturer, burning corn in a wood pellet stove could be a dangerous practice. Corn burns much hotter than wood pellets, and in many stoves may actually result in a melted burn pot. The wood pellet owners were told this, but many did not care, because they were fed up with wood pellets because they could not find them during the coldest months of the year. Often times when they did find them, the price of the pellets was jacked up so much that it was economically unfeasible to heat with them. Many wood pellet stove owners were coming to us to buy a corn stove, because corn unlike wood pellets, is always available.
